Standby time has come to an end! Melwin Fink: “….Our biggest enemy will be the cold…”
Next Generation Sailing sets course today at 4:00 pm from Esbjerg to the starting line of their long-awaited and planned record-breaking round Denmark. The start will be around 2:00 am . It is very, very cold, so the temperatures are anything but inviting, but the wind is extremely suitable for their project.
But: clear visibility, wind of 30-40 knots in the North Sea, 12 hours later after rounding Skagen it becomes calmer! “The weather is exactly as we wanted it to be all along....but the Baltic Sea wave will be an incalculable risk that might slow us down a bit...” says Melwin Fink on Monday evening. If theory and practice are identical, they will set off in an easterly wind of around 20-25 knots and then sail reaching around Skagen to Copenhagen. With a northerly wind, they will then sail through the Öresund to Bornholm. But we don't want to give too much away... especially as this is only the current forecast.
Overall, the record trip will be more like the Mini Transat in terms of rhythm, as the many maneuvers will mean that Lennart and Melwin will only be able to sleep for a maximum of one hour.
The Next Generation Sailing team will be accompanied by its main sponsor Task Engineering, some of its business partners and members of the Aarhus International Sailing Center. The start of the sailing season in the form of this world record race is also intended to underline this year's major goals, which will culminate in the Transat Cafe L'Or. After Boris Herrmann, among others, described the Next Generation Sailing team as the potential new generation in Imoca sailing, Lennart and Melwin are both flattered and motivated to stand out with the best performances.
In addition to the world record, Next Generation Sailing also wants to set a good reference time for Class 40s, which should inspire others to emulate them!
So: stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed!
